Just a simple PDF download has revolutionized the world of digital publishing today. Where we once dressed up, went into a bookstore, browsed the shelves and purchased a printed manual, we now fire up a Web browser, click a few buttons and perform a PDF download - and start reading within minutes!

The PDF download process is simple, elegant and effective in distributing content to the target audience who is eagerly searching for it. PDF downloads are fast, easy and cheap (almost free) and capable of distributing text, graphic and even audio-visual content (by linking to websites).

Ezines as PDF Download

An electronic magazine (or ezine) is a resource about a particular topic or subject, distributed by eMail and more recently as PDF downloads. Ezines deliver content to readers, just like newspapers and magazines deliver information to subscribers.

And just as subscribers pay for information that is valuable to them, your ezine can become a vehicle to sell your content online. It depends on the topic of your ezine, and the quality, relevance and utility of your content to readers. Whenever an interested prospect visits your ezine website for a PDF download, you are communicating personally with a targeted prospect.

That said, there aren't many ezines that are presented as a PDF download and have successfully implemented such a revenue model. Of course, ezines offer alternative revenue streams to paid subscriptions. The most widely used are ezine advertising and sponsorships - both of which are dependent on your ezine's readership, which again is related to the quality of ezine content and how easily it can be distributed like as a PDF download.

You may have spent hours creating, collating or buying up content on a specific topic or subject, and might wish to present it as a PDF download. If the content is difficult to aggregate, and if the topic is likely to interest an audience willing to pay for such a collection, it can be presented online as a paid PDF download.

A password-protected Website to which access is allowed only on paying an entry fee is an option in these cases. But remember - with so much content available for free on the Web, you'll have to create a really impressive collection before people will flock to your site and shell out money for it, especially as you will be delivering it not as a printed newsletter but as a PDF download.

Syndicating Content as a PDF Download

Another way to distribute your content is to offer syndication by third-party publications by making it available as a PDF download. Just as freelance writers permit their work to be published on many newspapers, magazines and books, you may offer your online content for syndication on other Websites.

There are many syndication models in vogue. Your content may be created specifically for a syndication partner and sent to them as a PDF download. In these situations, your content will be run exclusively on the partner's site, and carry only the partner's packaging and branding around it, though within the PDF download you will have a chance to promote your own brand to the new audience you'll reach through them.

In a co-branding model, your content may be displayed as a PDF download on the partner's Website along with your company's branding. This may be all the remuneration you receive for syndication, or a fee-structure in addition may be worked out, but the cost and trouble of hosting your PDF download falls on your partner.

In yet another version, the content remains on your Website. The partner's site may contain only a short 'teaser' copy with a link to your content or to the PDF download, or alternatively, your content might be displayed within a frame on the partner's service. Syndication of content is an area of interest for many information publishers, and services are growing rapidly and sign up several content providers to syndicate content to third parties, mainly in the form of a PDF download.
